Solicitor Graduate, Abuse

Manchester

Jacob is a Solicitor Graduate Apprentice within Simpson Millar's Abuse Claims team based in the Manchester office.

Professional Biography

Jacob proudly holds a First-Class law degree from Lancaster University, which he achieved in 2021. Before joining Simpson Millar, he gained experience as a Legal Assistant at another law firm, dealing predominantly with Personal Injury cases. His duties there included assisting with claimant road traffic accident cases, and public liability and employer's liability matters.

His commitment extends beyond the courtroom. At the age of 17, he was already volunteering at the Citizens Advice Bureau in Morecambe, assisting with a range of issues, from employment and benefits to consumer disputes. Recently, he was involved in a fundraising initiative for the National Association of People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC). Jacob also participated in a sponsored walk in August 2023, aiming to further contribute to this worthy cause.

Jacob's journey with Simpson Millar began in October 2021 as a Paralegal, and by February 2023, he became a Solicitor Graduate Apprentice. Working closely with Solicitor Nathalie Swanwick, Jacob actively manages Civil Claims against schools, religious institutions, charitable organisations, and local authorities. Beyond this, he plays a role in assisting with applications to various survivor redress schemes and applications for Criminal Injuries Compensation on behalf of survivors who have been physically or psychologically injured because they were a victim of a violent crime.

Professional Memberships/Accreditations

Highlighting his dedication, Jacob is also a member of the Association of Child Abuse Lawyers (ACAL).

Case Studies / Notable Cases

A particular highlight in Jacob’s career unfolded at the First-Tier Tribunal. He helped represent a client, previously denied compensation by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) on the basis that she had not fully cooperated with the police. He assisted in forming an argument that  our client had done her utmost to cooperate with the police in the circumstances, as she had been experiencing severe domestic abuse at the time. This resulted in a victory, as the Tribunal reversed the CICA’s decision and held that our client was entitled to her due compensation. It was a significant day, and Jacob felt privileged to stand by and support our client during the appeal process and the hearing.

Jacob's commitment lies in ensuring abuse survivors are acknowledged, believed, and adequately supported throughout their fight for justice. He often hears from clients that their decision to pursue a claim isn't about money, but about being heard and finding closure. This genuine need to support his clients and understand their journey is what drives him daily. With his background in education, practical experience, and genuine care for the community, he creates a comforting presence at Simpson Millar, offering a compassionate hand to those seeking justice and understanding.
