Hayley Buchan is an Associate Solicitor in our Court of Protection department, working with clients nationwide.
Professional Biography
Hayley graduated with a first-class honours degree in Law and Criminology from The University of Sheffield in 2016. Beginning her career as a Public Law Paralegal in 2018, she gained valuable experience in the Education and Court of Protection teams. Hayley completed her Legal Practice Course (LPC) with a Master of Laws (LLM) at the University of Law, achieving a Distinction in August 2021. She commenced her training contract in September 2020 and was admitted as a Solicitor in 2022.
Specialising in Public Law since 2018, Hayley has a particular interest in Court of Protection matters, advocating particularly for young women with severe mental health issues who have been detained under the Mental Health Act. She regularly works alongside the Official Solicitor (a legal officer appointed to act for those unable to represent themselves) to safeguard the interests of her clients.
Hayley is an active member of the Court of Protection Practitioners Association (CoPPA), where she engages with peers to stay at the forefront of developments in her field.
Hayley's expertise was crucial in a complex case that involved multiple legal jurisdictions, including the Court of Protection, the family court, and the Inherent Jurisdiction. She represented a vulnerable female client, through her litigation friend the Official Solicitor, in a case that successfully concluded with the client regaining her capacity and returning home after a prolonged period of detention.
Hayley is dedicated to advocating for her clients' rights, ensuring that their wishes and feelings are respected to the fullest extent possible. Her passion law is driven by a commitment to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals, empowering them through skilled legal advocacy.
