Alice Gough is a Trainee Solicitor in our Health and Welfare, Court of Protection team, based in our Manchester office.
Professional Biography
Alice graduated from the University of Leeds in 2017 with a 2:1 in Law. She later completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC) with Distinction at the University of Central Lancashire in 2023, alongside achieving a Master of Laws (LLM).
Alice first joined Simpson Millar as a Paralegal in April 2020, working in the Education team. She supported vulnerable clients through Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Tribunals, representing them at hearings and assisting senior colleagues with judicial review cases challenging unlawful decisions by local authorities. Alice worked closely with families, schools, and professionals to secure appropriate educational support for children and young people with additional needs.
Alice began her training contract at Simpson Millar in the Education team before moving to the Health and Welfare Court of Protection team for her second seat. Her work now focuses on cases concerning a person’s capacity to make decisions about their health and welfare, including issues relating to care, residence, and contact with others. She also assists with cases involving challenges to Deprivations of Liberty (DoLS), which occur when a person is under continuous supervision and is not free to leave their place of residence due to concerns about their safety or wellbeing.
Alice is committed to ensuring that individuals who lack capacity have their rights protected and that decisions made on their behalf are fair and in their best interests. Her experience in both Education and Court of Protection law has given her a clear understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals and their families, and she works to provide practical and effective legal support.
