Solicitor, Medical Negligence
Adam Copeland is a Solicitor in our Medical Negligence department, working with clients nationwide.
Professional Biography
Adam graduated with a First Class Honours in English Language and Literature from Durham University in 1987, followed by the Common Professional Examination in 1994 and the Legal Practice Course in 1995, both at the University of Northumbria, earning commendations in each. He was admitted as a Solicitor in May 1998. Throughout his career, Adam has worked exclusively in Clinical Negligence, representing claimants who have suffered due to medical negligence. He specialises in a range of complex areas including birth injuries and obstetric issues, wrongful births, misdiagnosis or late diagnosis of cancer, brain injuries, fatalities due to medical errors, and cases of surgical negligence. Adam has been a member of the AvMA panel for over 20 years, and he is recognised for his innovative legal strategies, particularly in landmark cases impacting the rights of secondary victims.
Adam's daily work involves evaluating potential new cases to see if they may qualify for a civil claim (a legal claim for compensation if someone has been harmed due to negligence). He meticulously manages the full spectrum of the claims process from the initial gathering and assessment of medical records, through to the preparation of witness statements and expert evidence. Adam is responsible for drafting claims and handling responses, navigating through pre-trial litigation, and always aiming for settlement through negotiation to avoid trial wherever possible. The majority of his cases are resolved without needing to reach court.
Adam is a member of the AvMA Specialist Clinical Negligence Panel.
Adam has handled significant cases such as Walters v North Glamorgan NHS Trust, which became a leading case for secondary victims. He settled a complex wrongful birth claim, X(1) Y(2) v Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, involving a child born with Down syndrome for over £14 million. He also recently settled a delayed diagnosis of breast cancer for £450,000 on a provisional damages basis, providing the client with the right to return to court due to the progression of the disease. Sadly, the disease recurred. As a result of the protection obtained, Adam was able to secure a full admission of liability due to the progression of the cancer.
Driven by a commitment to fairness and a desire to effect positive change, Adam is passionate about the law and its capacity to right wrongs. He values clear communication and thorough explanations to ensure clients are well-informed and comfortable throughout their legal journey. His goal is always to secure the best possible outcome for his clients, giving them a voice and the means to move forward in their lives.
"Adam Copeland best in the game - WIN WIN WIN- Outstanding Service from Start to Finish. I first contacted Simpson Millar in 2021, feeling distressed about my situation. From the very beginning, their service has been outstanding. They were incredibly efficient and quick in responding to me, getting the ball rolling immediately. While the process was lengthy, the team was supportive every step of the way. Every single person I dealt with made me feel like my case mattered. Despite it not being a high-value case compared to others, I was treated as if it was just as important. Their dedication ensured I received the closure I needed. Even when things became tricky, they left no stone unturned in proving negligence and fighting for justice on my behalf. A special mention goes to Adam Copeland, who has been absolutely phenomenal. His expertise, honesty, and ability to build an amazing rapport with me truly stood out. He went above and beyond, answering all my questions—even when I needed clarification on the same points—without any judgment. Adam's straightforward and reassuring approach put me completely at ease. Once he took over my case in its final stages, everything progressed rapidly, leading to a successful outcome... "
